The school holidays are here. What do parents do when the kids are at home this coming month?

It will not be long before the dreaded statement, ‘I’m bored!’ Which is followed by the inevitable question, ‘What can I do?’ Especially with the restrictions that most of us face around the world. How do you do school holidays in a COVID world?

Well, after the book option has been considered, all the board games have been played and the house chores have been done, and you cannot stand watching them on Xbox anymore… what is next?

With a few film options at the theatres and with a multitude of options on the many streaming services, there are some survival ideas for the holiday season.

Reel Dialogue Holiday Survival Kit is here for you. Packed with care by the Reel Dialogue team.

A family movie adventure

Going to the cinemas can be expensive for a family with little children, but that does not mean that you can’t go to see a film together. Sometimes all it takes is a little effort and research. Also, you have to consider the current atmosphere for a healthy option at the theatres.

Through the cinemas websites and after reading the reviews at Reel Dialogue, you can find films in the area at discounted rates. Different days of the week or times of the day offer rates that are cheaper for families. Make it an adventure.

Discover the treasure that does not have to cost you a fortune. There are always cinemas that are having specials in the area.

For families: The Secret Garden, Trolls World Tour, Mulan (Disney+), The One and Only Ivan (Disney+)

For the mature viewer: Love, Guaranteed (Netflix), Tenet, Love Sarah (Apple), Katie

The Great DVD Swap

Do you have a network of friends? Family friends who have kids, too.

The first question to ask yourself: Do you have any DVDs? Even if you have watched your whole library 10+ times, your friends haven’t seen them. You might be surprised to know that people do still have DVDs in their cupboard.

What does this mean? Your friends most likely have a DVD collection that you have not seen, too.

The next question: Do you trust your friends? If the answer is yes, then how about considering a swap? During the holidays, you could trade your DVD collections or at least some of your DVDs.

Your kids would get a fresh set of films for the holidays and you might even be able to enjoy some time with your friends.

Going Bargain Hunting

Would you like a cheap option for upgrading your film collection that can be fun for the whole family? On a rainy day, head to the local shopping centre and find the discount store that has large bins of DVDs on sale.

Give each child a specific dollar limit and in 30 minutes have them go through and find the best (or worst) film they can find within their budget.

When they come back and after you check out the rating, you can purchase the DVDs and then you walk out of the store with one or two films per child.

Head to the local grocery store, buy some popcorn and M&Ms and then head home and enjoy an inexpensive, but fun day watching films together.

Flickin’ through the Flix (Streaming)

Find an old television show and on a rainy day (There always is one)
