Bible reference(s): Matt 15:29-31; 16:13-28; 27:27-46

If God could suffer, how could he be all powerful? How could we expect him to do anything about the problem of suffering? Why believe in a God that suffers?

The presence of suffering in the world raises challenges concerning the goodness and power of God. But suffering raises another problem: suffering implies weakness and fallibility. If God were to suffer, wouldn’t it prove he is not all powerful and not able to deal with the problem of suffering?

The Jews of Jesus’ day knew this to be true, that is why they were looking for a glorious conquering Christ, who would overthrow the Romans and restore Israel to glory. We too have expectations about how an all-powerful God would handle suffering but are our expectations right?

In this talk Rob Martin continues to work through the book of Matthew and examine what happens when Jesus confronts the expectations of those he encountered.
