'Dangling Man’ is the title of a 1944 novel by American author Saul Bellow. It tells the story of a young unemployed man named Joseph, waiting to be drafted during World War II. It’s full of the existential angst of waiting, ‘hanging’ between the two worlds of civilian life and the army, with the secure identities they promise.
Perhaps ‘Dangling Man’ could be a metaphor for our experience of 2020, as we collectively held our breath, waiting, waiting and waiting some more…for a vaccine, for a cure, for certainty?
